Task 25/63 joint article on synergies and trade-offs between storage, transmission, and sector coupling has been published
Transmission expansion is important at all levels of sector coupling
This IEA Wind Task 25/63 collaboration article explores the impacts of restrictions on transmission expansion and higher energy storage costs. Storage cost uncertainty significantly impacts system cost as the level of sector coupling increases, while restricting transmission expansion increases system costs across all sector coupling levels. Furthermore, transmission expansion and energy storage investments show an inverse relationship and optimal investment solutions are found to have a mix of transmission and energy storage in capacity expansion at all levels of sector coupling.
