Objectives

This task addresses several core research questions essential to the sustainable expansion of wind energy.

  • First, it asks how wind turbine noise is generated and how individual sources, such as blade tip noise, can be accurately characterised. There is a lack of experimental data on wind turbine noise; therefore, the task will include noise measurements, making it foundational for model validation.
  • Second, the task will investigate how noise propagates from the turbine to both near-field and far-field receivers, including the validity of the common point-source assumption and the influence of atmospheric and offshore conditions. These issues are critical because turbine height and complex refraction effects mean wind turbine noise behaves as an atypical industrial noise source.
  • Third, the task examines how people perceive wind turbine noise, especially the role of amplitude modulation and tonal components in annoyance. Understanding this is vital, as annoyance is the most consistently observed consequence and a major barrier to social acceptance.

Participation

This is a new task, and participation is currently being finalised. No formal arrangements have yet been made, but it is expected that these will be concluded shortly.

Progress, Results, and Impact in 2025

The task was approved in November 2025, and kicks off in 2026, therefore there are no impacts from 2025 to report.

Next steps

In 2026, the Task will initiate coordination meetings and webinars to align partners across engineering and social‑science work packages. Preparatory work for the 5 MW measurement campaign will begin, including instrumentation planning and preliminary test setups. Early model‑comparison exercises and initial analyses of existing datasets will be conducted. Tranche B will launch development of the auralisation framework and begin reviewing international regulatory approaches. Expected results include a shared technical roadmap, initial validation insights, early AM characterisation findings, and a first set of engagement materials to support collaboration across the Task.
