IEA Wind TCP Task 55

REFWIND – Reference Wind Turbines and Plants
Services

About Task 55

The purpose of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Wind Task 55 REFWIND is to coordinate international efforts toward the rigorous definition of reference wind turbines and plants. The reference systems address land-based applications as well as fixed-bottom and floating offshore installations.
The reference systems are designed collaboratively from organizations across the world and are fully open source. The designs are suitable for studies around new technologies to maximize the value of wind energy as well as studies investigating the social and environmental impact of wind energy.
This Task builds upon the successful efforts conducted within the now-concluded IEA Wind Task 37 on Wind Energy Systems Engineering: Integrated Research, Design, Development and Operation.
Task 55 also continues the series of successful workshops around systems engineering for wind energy, promoting studies around multi-fidelity, risk-aware, and multi-disciplinary approaches to solve design problems for existing and future wind energy systems. The main workshops led by the new Task will be the 7th and 8th Wind Energy Systems Engineering (WESE) Workshops, which will be held in 2024 and 2026, respectively. The 6th WESE Workshop was held in Boulder, CO, co-organized by the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Technical University of Denmark, working together within Task 37.

Task 55 works in tight collaboration with existing IEA Wind Tasks, such as Task 43 on Wind Digitalization, Task 47 on Aerodynamics, Task 49 on Floating Wind Arrays, and Task 50 on Hybrid Power Plants.

Task 55 Work Packages

  • WP1 Reference Wind Turbines: WP1 focuses on land-based and offshore reference wind turbines. Reference wind turbines are key to allow researchers and industry to collaborate to improve and benchmark wind turbine design tools as well as to assess the impact of novel technologies on wind turbines. The flagship reference turbine is the new IEA 22 MW wind turbine. A new land-based reference wind turbine is also underway.
  • WP2 Wind Turbine Ontology: WP2 aims to further improve the turbine ontology windIO, which is a common framework defining the inputs and outputs of wind turbines and plants. windIO is increasingly adopted by turbine designers and modelers.
  • WP3 Reference Wind Plants: WP3 focuses on the definition of novel reference wind plants. Reference wind plants are key to allow researchers and industry to collaborate to improve and benchmark design tools as well as to assess the impact of novel technologies on wind plants. First, two offshore reference wind plants will be defined, one with fixed-bottom installations and one with floating substructures. The floating reference wind plant will be defined in collaboration with IEA Wind Task 49 on Floating Arrays. Last, a land-based reference wind plant will be defined and released.
  • WP4 Wind Plant Ontology: WP4 aims to further improve the farm ontology implemented in windIO.
  • WP5 Workshops: WP5 organizes the series of Wind Energy Systems Engineering (WESE) Workshops together with focused virtual and in-person workshops about work ongoing in work packages 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Participation

Who can participate in Task 55?

To participate in the research activities of Task 55, researchers must reside in a country that participates in the IEA Wind Agreement AND has agreed by official letter to participate in Task 55.

To join a task, a member country of IEA Wind TCP must designate a lead institution that agrees to the obligations of task participation (pay the annual fee and agree to perform specified parts of the work plan).

Active researchers (performing part of the work plan) benefit from meetings and professional exchange during the term of the task. Countries participating in the task benefit from the information developed by the task.

For more information, contact the Task 55 Operating Agents (contact information below) or the Secretary of IEA Wind.
