General Meeting 2025 – Minutes published

After various discussions in the past, we are organizing a joint Task 52 / IEC MT 50 workshop on 26-28 January 2026 in Blyth, UK. For this, we start with one and a half days of workshop discussing the key questions which are relevant to both expert working groups – as e.g.

• which further developments can we expect to be covered by IEC standardization in the upcoming and future maintenance cycles?
• where do we need further R&D, experimental evidence, or technology development steps?
• do we need new approaches for AI-based data processing, and how could they be implemented?
• are there specific areas of the lidar landscape that require further attention by Task 52, MT 50, or both?

On the third day, MT 50 will have their kick-off meeting as a hybrid meeting at the same location, so that nominated experts and observers are very welcome to stay for all three days.

Joint IEC PT 50-5 / IEA Wind Task 52 – Scanning Lidar (SL) End-user workshop

18 November 2024 (10-12 GMT – hybrid / TIC Glasgow, UK)

The objective of this 2-hour workshop (in advance to the IEC PT50-5 meeting) was to ensure guidelines from both IEC and IEA Wind Task 52 under development meet industry needs, and in particular the needs of wind farm developers working already or in the future with scanning lidar (SL) data. Conclusions feed into both the work of PT 50-5 and Task 52 Working Group #6.

Summary:

Advancements in wind lidars and remote sensing technology allowed our research community to gain an unprecedented insight into the aerodynamics of wind turbines and their interaction with the atmospheric processes. The International Energy Agency (IEA) Wind Technology Collaboration Program (TCP) Task 52 focuses on the development of integration lidar systems and the creation of guidelines to enhance the penetration of this technology into the wind energy industry at a large scale. For the first time, the NAWEA/WindTech Conference 2024 will host a side meeting for Task 52 on Tuesday, Oct 29^th, 8am – 12pm ET (Venue TBD). World experts in lidar and remote sensing will convene to touch base on the status of the Task and discuss the latest scientific endeavors. The main goals of the meeting are to foster the engagement of US-based industry, national labs, and academia, explore the potential of new remote sensing technologies for wind energy, and reassess the future steps of Task 52 in light of the new scientific, technological, and social landscape.
