Working Group 1
This working group aims to contribute to solving the first Grand Challenge of Digitalisation in Wind Energy “Creating FAIR data frameworks”, which is related to the topic of “data”. The tasks of this WG include:
Learning about data
We aim to research into metadata and knowledge engineering for wind energy applications and use the results to develop recommendations for the sector. This includes further developing and disseminating the IEA Wind Task 43 Glossary, creating a knowledge base for documenting and evaluating different vocabularies, taxonomies and ontologies relevant for wind energy. As well as this, we run and document a public webinar series in order to bring together domain experts with data modelling experts and learn from other industries.
Vocabulary and ontology development
We develop new ontologies for specific applications by evaluating, iteratively prototyping and demonstrating their use, then focusing on the dissemination on the TechnoPortal.
Schema development
We produce small, actionable nuggets of JSON schema that people can use now. For this, we define schemas for certain applications, provide examples of how to use open-source ontologies to build data models and/or modular schema, publish examples of gaining insights from unstructured data, and give examples of a modular workflow. Data services and digital twins
We are developing best practices for digital twin architectures in the wind energy industry, based on the lessons learned from invited speakers at our monthly meetings. If you have a digital twin architecture or conceptual model either used for or relevant for wind energy, please let us know!
Data maturity roadmap development
We analyse the current data maturity situation of the sector and develop plans for increasing the data maturity in the future. The goal is to help the sector reach frictionless data access within and between organisations by 2030 to enable wind plant autonomy, process automation, digital twins, benchmarks, data sharing and data findability.
Recent activities
Upcoming webinar
Our next webinar in the IEA Wind Task 43 Webinar Series, “Ontology creation and publishing workshop for the wind energy sector” takes place on Nov. 6th, 2024. In this one-hour webinar, we will introduce you to the concept of ontologies, give you an update on our new ontology hosting portal TechnoPortal, and then run through the process for creating and publishing your own ontology on the TechnoPortal. Sign up here.
Webinar recording
Our latest webinar in the IEA Wind Task 43 Webinar Series, “Why does the wind energy sector need to start talking about digital twin architecture?” took place on Sep. 20th, 2024. The recording is available here.
Publication of paper “Knowledge Engineering for Wind Energy Digitalisation”
Our paper “Knowledge Engineering for Wind Energy Digitalisation” has been published in the Wind Energy Science journal. The article addresses the challenges faced by wind energy domain experts in converting data into domain knowledge, connecting and integrating them with other sources of knowledge, and making them available for use in next-generation artificial intelligence systems.
