Task 45 Work Plan and Objectives

The challenges related to the recycling of wind turbine blades are broad and range from technical challenges to legislation disparities and lack of information on the materials to be recycled. The activities in the IEA Wind Task 45 are categorized into three main areas: technical topics, communication and dissemination activities, and the preparation of recommended practices.

Work Package 2 – How to enable the recycling of wind turbine blades?

WP2 focuses on key topics to ensure that recycling technologies are scalable. WP2 is organized in phases where technical, economic, environmental, social, and policy experts work on common subtasks and deliverables.

  • Robust wind turbine blade waste prediction
  • Reliable wind turbine data to support recycling
  • Harmonized policies on the recycling of blades
  • Economic viability in the upscaling of recycling technologies

Work Package 3 – Communication and dissemination

WP3 focuses on dissemination and knowledge sharing in the field of wind turbine blade recycling. The purpose of the dissemination activities is:

  • To create awareness around the IEA Wind Task 45 results, and
  • To share knowledge and expertise among wind turbine blade experts,  recycling experts from industry, academia, and public authorities.

Work Package 4Preparation of recommended practice and connection to IEC

The objective of WP4  is to formulate a new recommended practice dedicated to the recycling of wind turbine blades. This recommended practice should support the formulation of a future DNV and IEC standard on the same topic. The objective is not to have several diverging standards, therefore the participants in WP4 will coordinate with DNV and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to ensure that the recommended practice is the most relevant possible to the industry and for a future DNV and IEC standard.
