Task 32 2018 General Meeting

Background

At the end of 2018, Task 32 has been running for 6 years and has involved more than 400 people from 15 countries in about 20 meetings. We have also written reports and peer-reviewed papers, held Round-Robin comparisons, produced Recommended Practices and worked with many organizations in academia, government, and industry. Annual General Meetings provide a forum to share progress amongst participants and to find out from each other what still needs to be done.

The 2018 General meeting was organized by Task 32 together with Nergica, a centre of applied research that stimulates innovation in the renewable energy industry through research, technical assistance, technology transfer and technical support for businesses and communities. The meeting focused on sharing experience around using wind lidar on- and offshore in North America. Participants explored challenges and solutions, and discussed how to leverage international experience.

Summary

Several issues were discussed by the participants in depth during the breakout sessions:

Resource assessment onshore
Power performance testing
Lidar-assisted wind-turbine and wind-plant controls
The role of models in understanding and acting on lidar data
Remote sensing in cold climates
Improved uncertainty modeling.

The effect of complex flow and terrain was discussed within each group separately as it has different impacts on different use cases. The groups repeatedly identified the need for new or updated standards that recognise the capability of lidar. A further point of discussion was to explore how lidar data might be used differently than traditional cup anemometer and wind vane data to add value to wind plant development and operations.
